Mr. Brown joined the United States Air Force in March 1980 and attended basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Upon graduation he returned home to Meridian, Mississippi where he began on the job training at the 186th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, located in the G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery National Guard Complex. Mr. Brown performed Temporary Duty Assignments in England and France and received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Air Force in 1985. He received Honorable Discharges from the United States Air Force and the United States Army.
Mr. Brown began training dogs professionally in 1977. This included waterfowl and upland hunting, obedience, and behavior modification. In 1991 he attended Police K-9 Instructors School at Rudy Drexler’s School for Dogs in Elkhart, Indiana. He then worked for American Airlines and Corvington Security maintaining, training, and handling drug detection dogs to search international flights for bombs and contrabond.
Upon completing the K-9 search contract for American Airlines he returned home and continued his professional dog training career by opening his own full time Police K-9 training facility in Meridian, Mississippi. During this time, Mr. Brown imported, trained and placed Police dogs in all eight districts of the state. He also trained dogs for the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks, Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Meridian Police Department, Jones County Sheriff’s Department, Harrison County Narcotics Division, Hinds County Sheriff’s Department, Columbus Police Department, Hazelhurst Police Department, Ellisville Police Department, Sandersville Police Department, Leake County Sheriff’s Department, Leflore County Sheriff’s Department, Clinton Police Department, Neshoba County Sheriff’s Department, Newton County Sherriff’s Department, Columbus Police Department, Southhaven Police Department Natchez Police Department, Heidleberg Police Department, Forest Police Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, Union Police Department, Mississippi Highway Patrol, and the Mississippi Department of Homeland Security.
Mr. Brown was also the chosen trainer for a drug awareness program named “Project K-9” that was originally created by Mississippi Attorney General Mike Moore and the Mississippi “Telephone Pioneers”. The program was designed to increases drug awareness in children age six to twelve and promoted drug awareness by the selected K-9 teams performing demonstrations and drug searches at schools throughout the state. Brown also traveled to Holland, Germany, and Belgium several times to learn the European methods of Police dog training. He also performed selection testing and purchased dogs that he later trained for Police departments in the United States. He trained with the Dutch KNPV, trainers and the German Police and continued to travel extensively while in Europe.
Mr. Brown is the current owner of Specialty Canine of Mississippi and is a nationally recognized Police K-9 Instructor. He is a certified Reserve Police officer and is in his eighteenth year as the Police K-9 instructor for the Meridian, Mississippi Police Department. He manages a full time Police K-9 training kennel for the Meridian, Mississippi Police department located at the Meridian Public Safety Training Facility. He has been importing, selection testing, and training working dogs for Law-Enforcement and the general public for over twenty years. He also performs handler training, certifications, re-certifications, cross-trains, maintenance training, and general canine troubleshooting. Mr. Brown considers his specialty to be in the training of passive and aggressive response detection dogs. He has his own unique and very comprehensive method of dog training and handler instruction.
Mr. Brown also assisted his instructor, Rudy Drexler in training Dual purpose Police dogs for the Dallas Police Department, Las Vegas Police Department, Chicago Heights Police Department, Huntington Woods Police Department, and the Nashville Police Department. While at Mr. Drexler’s he also assisted in training dogs for narcotics and explosives detection for other potential buyers. He also performed obedience and personal protection training and instruction for Mr. Drexler’s civilian clients as well.
Mr. Brown has trained and selection tested working dogs in Belgium, Germany, Haiti, Holland, and Iraq. In 2009 Mr. Brown handled and trained Explosive detection dogs for the Department of Defense and Torres AES at Camp Phoenix Central Command in Baghdad, Iraq. His primary duty while in Baghdad was to perform “area searches” prior to meetings and functions between high ranking United States and Iraqi military and government officials. While working in Baghdad, Iraq he also assisted the United States Department of Defense and the Ministry of Defense by authoring technical K-9 application and implementation information that was used in presentations for educating key officials within the Iraqi Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Interior on the utility and effectiveness of working dogs. He is currently in his twenty-fifth year as a Police K-9 Trainer, Instructor, and is also an Explosive Detection Dog handler for the Meridian, Mississippi Police Department. He also currently trains Explosive Detection Dogs with the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Mr. Brown founded Defense Dogs USA, a K-9 contracting business that offers dogs for military, police, and civilian applications. Recently Mr. Brown assisted the United States Secret Service with his departmental Explosive Detection Dog during a visit by the Vice President and his family. During that business visit, the Vice President and his family also visited Mr. Browns personal residence and training facility to work with their Australian Shepard on obedience and behavior modification.
